As socialists, we believe that health care is a human right and a public good, and that a country as wealthy as the United States can afford to provide health care for everyone. Our committee is dedicated to eroding health inequities while fighting for a comprehensive health plan that covers everyone, like Medicare-for-All. Our meetings are every third Thursday at the Corpus Christi Community Center (2022 St Bernard Ave). Everyone is welcome!
Medicare for All Canvassing
The DSA Medicare for All campaign is a nationwide campaign advocating for a single, universal system with comprehensive coverage that is free at the point of service. We need a health care system that prioritizes the health of working-class Americans over the profits of insurance companies and their billionaire executives. Our chapter holds monthly canvasses in different neighborhoods where we talk to our neighbors about their experiences with the for-profit health care system and how we can work together to demand a more just health care system. Currently, there is a Medicare-for-All bill in the U.S. House of Representatives that has 122 co-sponsors and one in the U.S. Senate that has 16 co-sponsors. In other words, although this is still a long-term fight, we are closer to winning than many people think. Check out the National DSA Medicare-for-All campaign page for more information about how our local efforts fit into the work that DSA is doing nationally.
Every other month, our committee hosts community health fairs. We offer information about a wide variety of health care resources, such as local free clinics, reproductive health resources, harm reduction information, and home repair services. We also offer blood pressure and blood sugar screenings and assistance navigating the different health resources available in New Orleans. Lastly, we have partnered with the Debt Collective to offer assistance disputing medical debt, which is the leading cause of bankruptcies in the United States. Perhaps most importantly, we also have hot food, fruit, snacks, and drinks available for anyone who stops by.
Through these fairs, we hope to offer, to the best of our ability, concrete solutions to immediate material problems, while having conversations with our friends and neighbors about why those problems shouldn’t exist and how we can fight together for a better world.
