April General Membership Preview –Brodie L

Tomorrow is our April General Membership meeting! It is back to the usual time and place at the Healing Center #258 at noon. Though you should come early at 11:30am for coffee and camaraderie (also donuts!).

We have one resolution of New Business: members running for chapter positions must have attended three General Meetings and participated in six events or committee and working group meetings.

We will also have three Breakout Groups. First is Fundraising. We have done good work, but the march to pay rent and fund initiatives continues. We need your mind for fundraiser ideas and future events! The second is planning our Local Convention. Each year we assemble the largest number of our members, eat and visit, elect Local Council members, and conduct important business that can only be done at Convention. We want it to be the best yet, and we need you! Finally we will have a May Day group to discuss how to show up for workers this May 1st.

Don’t forget to RSVP! Even if you can’t make it, send in a proxy request with your proxy’s name or let us know to delegate yours. If you leave no voting instruction, your proxy will only be used to abstain so that we can meet quorum and conduct new business. And as always, chefs and snack providers, feel free to bring your new recipes or some chips and dip! We need a full stomach to fight for the future!

Direct Service & Health Justice Committee: A Huge Success!

Last weekend New Orleans DSA held a Brake Light Clinic and Free Health Fair in New Orleans East, and we are happy to report that it was a huge success! We changed over a dozen brake lights, saw over 20 patients, gave away at least 100 meals, and made connections in a part of our community the city often ignores. Thank you to every one of our members and comrades who came out to make this such a successful event. However, the work always continues and we will continue to try our hardest to meet that demand.

Saturday, May 9th is our next scheduled Fork and Knife Event, and we look forward to having many of you there, either bringing dishes, plating meals, or running boxes of food to the community fridges so we can continue to keep meeting the people where their needs are. Bill Criminalizing Homelessness Has Passed the State House: Act NOW! –Wash F

Described by National Homelessness Law Center as “one of the cruelest anti-homeless bills in the country,” HB211 criminalizes “unauthorized public camping,” punishable by up to $500 fines and imprisonment up to six months for first-time offenses. Any subsequent time people are caught having nowhere else to sleep, they would be fined up to $1,000 and are imprisoned for a minimum of one year (up to two years) “with or without hard labor.” It also:

• pushes localities to establish internment camps for people experiencing homelessness,
• creates a “Homelessness Court” system with more severe punishments than existing specialty courts (e.g. Community Court, Behavioral Health Court, Veterans Court, etc.),
• exposes municipalities to costly, frivolous lawsuits by giving people the right to sue them for “allowing” people to sleep outside, further forcing them to set up internment camps if no shelter exists.

Criminalizing poverty does nothing to end it – quite the opposite. And yet, this bill has passed the House (70-28) and already has the governor’s seal of approval. It is our final opportunity to stop this: we MUST flood our Senators’ inboxes. This is costly cruelty reaching national headlines for its depravity, not something that helps our unhoused neighbors.

Emergency ICE Protest With Unión Migrante This Morning

Yesterday morning, court watchers observed the first documented arrests of a family at immigration court since May of last year. We need to send a clear message to the city and show that the people of New Orleans will not tolerate these attacks on our neighbors! Show up at Immigration Court, 365 Canal St, today at 9:00 am.

Chevron Out of French Quarter Fest Fossil Free Afterparty Tomorrow!

After first dropping Chevron from the title sponsorship, the coalition received word that starting in 2027, the festival will no longer be sponsored by Chevron at all. To celebrate, everyone’s invited to the Fossil Free Afterparty tomorrow night at Saturn Bar, 8:00 pm to midnight.

Poli-Ed Reading Group: Che Guevara

Please join us at the Healing Center, Room 258, this Sunday to discuss Socialism and Man in Cuba by Che Guevara. The Poli-Ed Reading Group meets on the third Sunday of every month to chat about books, films, articles, and more. Come enjoy good times, good people, and good conversation.

Worker Power: Unión Migrante May Day March!

Join your DSA comrades at Unión Migrante’s Annual May Day March. We’ll march alongside labor, immigration, and faith groups to celebrate the workers’ struggle and agitate against wage theft and other evils. The march is May 1 at 5:30 pm.

Attend the UNO Justice Studies May Day Weekend Symposium

The Economic Justice Research Lab (EJRL) at the University of New Orleans, in partnership with allied unions and worker justice organizations, will host a one-day May Day Weekend symposium on Saturday, May 2, 2026, to present stories from our year-long collaborative oral history project on the history of labor and community organizing in New Orleans over the last fifty years. The symposium is free and open to all, but space is limited and pre-registration required. If you have questions, contact Rafael Delgadillo at rdelgad2@uno.edu.

Queer Soc: Queer Northshore Pride Parade

Hello to all fellow Queer Socialist Comrades! The New Orleans DSA’s Queer Socialist Section is set to walk in the Queer Northshore Pride Parade on May 30th! We will have ten to twenty people marching with us and we will be carrying a banner to celebrate our DSA chapter under the theme “We Rise Together”. We will be scheduling a banner build day soon and still have some spots open if anyone didn’t see this before and still wanted to join us on our march. Please contact either Artemis or Warren if you want to get involved and/or march!

Queer Soc: LGBTQ+ Map

New Orleans DSA’s Queer Socialists Section has released its map of pro- and anti- LGBTQ+ businesses in the greater New Orleans Area! This map is an ongoing project which requires community support. If you know of a business that is pro- or anti-LGBTQ+, or if you are the owner of a business, please submit information to Queer Soc’s tip-line!

Marketplace for Cooperatives

DSA members are starting a new tech worker cooperative, and one of our first projects is a marketplace where people can shop online at coops! This is socialism in action, as it supports businesses where workers own the means of production, rather than profiteering shareholders. Read more about the reasons why in our Manifesto.
