October General Meeting Preview –Brodie L
Happy Spooky Season, dear Comrades! The Saturday before my favorite holiday, Halloween, we will be holding our October General Membership meeting. We have a November resolution being introduced now to give time for members to offer their own perspectives. This Resolution is a short and comprehensive list of our Chapter’s goals in New Orleans. It will, in short, be our most important, concise platform for change in our City.
New Business includes the postponed motions from the previous GM: Resolutions to create a Chapter Wiki and Directory.
This GM will have food, but unfortunately child care and ADA accessibility is not possible at this current location. Please be assured we are constantly searching for venues to meet these needs. Given our suite and budget constraints, it has been difficult to find a cost-effective place that meets the needs of our entire diverse membership. But we are always looking and trying to improve our General Membership meetings.
Please remember to RSVP, and if you cannot make it, request a proxy for this meeting. We look forward to seeing you at noon on Saturday at Venusian Gardens! It is a potluck, so we highly encourage our membership to demonstrate their culinary talent or otherwise bring some food for us to enjoy post-GM.
Fall Voter Guide: Early Voting starts tomorrow! –Bob M
On the day when the thermometer of universal suffrage shows a boiling-point among the workers, they as well as the capitalists will know where they stand. -Friedrich Engels
DSA is the largest socialist organization in US history and our candidates’ recent electoral successes are causing capitalists to take aim. Attacks by elected officials and their hack advisors (Mitch Landrieu, Steve Scalise, James Carville, Quinn Hillyer, 220 members of Congress) make clear they see our rising popularity as the threat.
Meanwhile, the Republican governor, attorney general, and state legislature supermajority continue making us miserable for a bigoted president’s profit, and the billionaires are dropping the veil. They’re taking our land, polluting our water and stealing our electricity, and they don’t want these elected officials talking about it. Elections are not enough, but we know that elections in this country remain one of few ready outlets for the working class to express our collective political wishes.
Our chapter voter guide is out just in time for early voting. Give it a read before you head to the polls in Orleans, Jefferson, and St. Tammany Parishes. This voter guide isn’t just a review of the candidate’s websites and finances, but uses DSA’s Workers Deserve More program as our benchmark for candidates. Learn about what DSA fights for across the country, and if you haven’t already join us as a member of DSA!
Our voter guide is researched, written, and edited by our members and approved by our leadership. Our recommendations were debated and passed at our September General Meeting, and our endorsement passed through a democratic process among our members this summer.

Direct Service & Health Justice: Undue Medical Debt Fundraiser and Brake Light Clinic Updates
Our Brake Light Clinic this past Saturday in Kenner was a success! We changed twice as many brake lights as we did last time in this location. The community really spread the word; the event was even on a local Spanish radio station! We had a canvass for Lauren Jewett out there as well, and she happened to stop by. Thank you so much to everyone who put in time and work to help bring our clinic out to Kenner–the more hands we have, the more community we can serve.
Our Crush Medical Debt Campaign with Undue Medical Debt, Indivisible NOLA & WHIV has raised $725 so far of our $15k goal. We are planning fundraising events for this campaign for both November and December, and flyers are available at the Healing Center if you’re able to drop some off to display in local businesses.
Our Winter Clothing Drive will be accepting donations at our October GM, this Saturday, 10/24 at Venusian Gardens, and we are working on neighborhood circle events being donation locations as well.
Our next meeting is Tuesday, October 27 at 6pm, online. Join us! We are thrilled to have you, however you can contribute. Direct Service always accepts donations for supplies.
Bulletins
Afrosocialists and Socialists of Color: Monthly Meeting
This group not only seeks to develop our chapter’s membership to be more reflective of the demographics of New Orleans, but also serves as a hub for Black, Indigenous, and Socialists of Color to discuss our unique & shared experiences as socialists in community.
Join AfroSOC this Thursday at 6:00 pm online for our monthly planning meeting. We will cover November Direct Service, an upcoming social at Roots Plants + Coffee, and future collaborations with other chapter sections. Please RSVP!
Bringing the Party Back on Saturday, October 24
Voter turnouts of 28% and 18% stuck us with Jeff Landry and Liz Murrill, who rigged the maps and stole Calvin Duncan’s election. Chapter comrades are organizing citywide mobilizations to build excitement about early voting.
The October 24 Early Voting Tailgate at Chateau Menteur, 8726 Chef Menteur Hwy, will culminate in a second line to the polls at 1:30 pm. That same day downtown, we’ll have a Critical Mass bicycle takeover, a costumed Société Des Champs Elysée streetcar ride, Uptown and Treme second lines, and an Early Voting Rally at City Hall. “Wake Up N Vote” will provide free coffee and donuts near Algiers and City Hall early voting sites. We want to create one of the city’s biggest annual festivals , so volunteer and we’ll see you there!
Get Plugged in to Political Education!
Our next Commission meeting will be at 6:15 pm on October 28 on Meet. We will be going over assigned chapters from The World That Made New Orleans and assigning more chapters. All are welcome to participate!
Please come to our November 1 planning meeting to help us plan for a Quarterly Forum on Electoralism in December! We need speakers and panelists!
Submit your nominations for a new Night School Chair on the Discord or email hello@dsaneworleans.org by November 22 (subject line: ATTN POLI-ED Night School Chair Nomination).

Election Day is Tuesday November 3, 2026. Special education teacher, DSA member, and longtime United Teachers of New Orleans (AFT Local 527) member Lauren Jewett is running for Congress in LA-01, which covers much of the Greater New Orleans metro, Lakeview, and parts of Uptown and Mid-City. She’s fighting for public schools and their teachers; Medicare for All, reproductive freedom, and keeping our hospitals open; paid family leave and universal childcare for every worker; restoring our coast with union jobs; and ending the billionaire takeover of our government.
